Nous avons deux personnages importants dans cette parabole : d’une part un juge qui ne craint pas Dieu et n’a d’égards pour personne ; d’autre part une veuve qui est faible, mais qui est convaincue de ses droits et est décidée de les faire valoir. À la fin, le juge donne à la veuve ce qu’elle demande, tout simplement pour qu’elle cesse de venir l’importuner.

Homily

We have two important characters in this parable: on the one hand, a judge who does not fear God and has no regard for anyone; on the other hand, a widow who is weak, but who is convinced of her rights and is determined to assert them. In the end, the judge gives the widow what she asks for, simply so that she will stop bothering him.

          In the Gospel, we have two versions of Jesus' sending out on mission: the first, common to the three synoptic Gospels, is addressed to the twelve Apostles; the other, longer version, which we have just read and which is specific to Luke, is addressed to the seventy-two disciples.

I knew a Baptist minister, who was a very good Christian, and who used to come often to make retreats at our monastery in Conyers. Several years ago he did not feel too well and went to see a doctor. After a series of tests the doctor told him that he had terminal cancer, and had probably only a few months to live. The man received that news with a very great peace and did not seem to be disturbed at all. The doctor was puzzled by that serenity and told him: "Most people are very deeply disturbed or even discouraged when they are told that they have cancer, especially terminal cancer. How is it that you are so peaceful" The man answered: "Well, my conviction is that we are all terminal!"

Conocí a un pastor baptista de Estados Unidos que venía a menudo a nuestro monasterio de Holy Spirit, en Georgia, para hacer retiros. Hace varios años, no se encontraba muy bien y fue a ver a un médico. Tras una serie de pruebas, el médico le dijo que tenía un cáncer terminal y que probablemente sólo le quedaban unos meses de vida. El hombre acogió la noticia con gran serenidad y no pareció perturbado en absoluto. El médico se sorprendió de esta serenidad y le dijo: "La mayoría de la gente se altera mucho, incluso se desanima, cuando le dicen que tiene cáncer, sobre todo un cáncer terminal. ¿Cómo es que usted está tan tranquilo? La respuesta fue: "Bueno, ¡estoy convencido de que todos somos en phase terminal!
