Col 2, 6-15 ; Lc 6, 12-19

HOMILY

          “If you want to pray, Jesus said to his disciples, enter your cell, shut the door and pray your father in secret”.

          Jesus himself often did something very similar. He often went to the mountain, specially during the night, to pray his Father in secret. And if you examine all the instances in the Gospel when he does that, you will see that it is almost always before making an important decision. We have an example in today's Gospel. Before choosing his twelve apostles, Jesus spends a whole night of prayer on the mountain.

Fête de la Nativité de Marie,

Michée 5, 1-4a ; Mt 1, 1-16. 18-23

Homélie

          Les Évangiles sont très discrets au sujet de la Vierge Marie. Chaque fois qu’elle est mentionnée c’est pour montrer sa place et son rôle dans les étapes majeures du mystère du Salut. Elle est là au jour de l’Annonciation pour prononcer son « Oui » et recevoir en son sein le Fils du Père Éternel. Elle sera là à quelques étapes de la vie publique de son Fils et surtout près de la Croix et avec les Apôtres le jour de la Pentecôte.

As we enter the final phase of the liturgical year, the cycle of Sunday Bible readings reminds us with increasing insistence of certain fundamental aspects of Christian life, especially the need to belong radically to Christ.

Feast of the Nativity of Mary,

Micah 5:1-4a; Matthew 1:1-16,18-23

Homily

The Gospels are very discreet about the Virgin Mary. Whenever she is mentioned, it is to show her place and role in the major stages of the mystery of Salvation. She is there on the day of the Annunciation to say her ‘Yes’ and receive the Son of the Eternal Father in her womb. She will be there at several stages of her Son's public life, especially at the foot of the Cross and with the Apostles on the day of Pentecost.

H O M É L I E

          Comme en beaucoup d'autres cas, c'est encore aujourd'hui la dernière phrase de la lecture de l'Évangile qui donne son sens au texte que nous avons lu: "Le Fils de l'homme est maître du sabbat." Par ces paroles Jésus nous révèle le sens ultime de la loi -- de toute loi.

          Au moment où nous entrons dans la dernière phase de l’année liturgique, le cycle des lectures bibliques du dimanche nous rappelle avec de plus en plus d’insistance certains aspects fondamentaux de la vie chrétienne, et tout spécialement le besoin d’appartenir radicalement au Christ.

HOMILY

As in many other instances, it is once again the last sentence of the Gospel reading that gives meaning to the text we have read: ‘The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.’ With these words, Jesus reveals to us the ultimate meaning of the law -- of all law.
