27 February 2026 - Friday of the first week of Lent

Ezek 18:21-28; Mt 5:20-26

Homily

Sometimes, if we read the Gospel superficially, we get the impression that Jesus is not very logical or coherent in his teaching. There are texts in the Gospel in which He preaches against the legalism of the Pharisees, saying that the Sabbath was made for human beings and not human beings for the Sabbath, and so on. But at other times, Jesus tells us things like what we have just heard: that if our righteousness does not surpass that of the Scribes and Pharisees, we will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The explanation for this discrepancy is certainly that Jesus operates according to a different type of wisdom and logic from our own.

Jonas 3, 1-10 ; Luc 11, 29-32

          Le prophète Jonas fut envoyé par Dieu aux païens de la cité de Ninive. Mais il ne voulait pas avoir cette mission, et il s’enfuit vers la cité de Tarsis. Cela, comme nous le savons, le conduisit – lui et tous ses compagnons – dans une terrible tempête. Au coeur de cette tempête, il reconnut son péché et il accepta – il demanda même – d’être jeté à la mer pour calmer la colère de Dieu. C’est alors qu’il commença une expérience de solitude, symbolisée par le temps qu’il passa dans le ventre d’un gros poisson, avant de commencer, finalement, sa mission qui était de prêcher un message de repentance. Cependant, il lui était impossible de comprendre qu’une cité païenne pourrait se convertir à Dieu ; et lorsqu’elle se convertit, il en fut contrarié. Comme nous le savons par le reste de l’histoire, Dieu va lui faire comprendre, à travers l’image de la plante qui croît en un jour et qui meurt le lendemain, qu’il a le même amour miséricordieux pour la ville païenne de Ninive que pour le peuple d’Israël.

25 February 2026 :: Wednesday of the 1st week of Lent

Jonah 3:1-10; Luke 11:29-32

Homily

The prophet Jonah was sent by God to the pagans of the city of Nineveh. But he did not want this mission, and he fled to the city of Tarshish. This, as we know, led him and all his companions into a terrible storm. In the midst of this storm, he recognized his sin and accepted – even asked – to be thrown into the sea to calm God's wrath. It was then that he began an experience of solitude, symbolized by the time he spent in the belly of a large fish, before finally beginning his mission to preach a message of repentance. However, it was impossible for him to understand that a pagan city could convert to God; and when it did convert, he was upset. As we know from the rest of the story, God made him understand, through the image of the plant that grew in one day and died the next, that He had the same merciful love for the pagan city of Nineveh as He did for the people of Israel.

H O M É L I E 

          Depuis le début du Carême, les textes de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Testament lus à la célébration eucharistique nous mettent en garde avec une insistance soutenue et vraiment impressionnante, contre la fausseté et l'inutilité d'une pratique religieuse qui ne se traduirait pas dans une vie d'amour et de service fraternel bien concrets.

Homily

          Since the beginning of Lent, the texts from the Old and New Testaments read at the Eucharistic celebration have warned us with sustained and truly impressive insistence against the falseness and futility of religious practice that does not translate into a life of concrete love and fraternal service.

Homélie

          Dieu a créé l’homme et la femme à son image. Il en a fait des êtres de communion et a même insufflé en eux son propre souffle, son esprit de communion. Et il leur a fait un don extrêmement dangereux, celui de la liberté. Depuis lors -- depuis le premier homme et la première femme jusqu’à nous -- l’être humain est soumis à la tentation, c’est-à-dire au tiraillement entre l’appel à la communion, qui est un appel à la plénitude de vie, et la tendance à refuser la communion pour se replier sur soi.
