August 19, 2026, Wednesday of the 20^th week

Ezekiel 34, 1-11; Matt 20, 1-16

According to all the principles accepted today in the field of labour relations, the employer in our Gospel acts in a rather strange and even unacceptable way. His attitude certainly does not correspond to our criteria of justice, and is even disconcerting. Equally disconcerting are the last words of the parable: ‘The last will be first and the first will be last’. The first Christians seem to have been confused by these words of Jesus, each of the Evangelists placing them in a different context, and Matthew even repeating them twice.

          Dans le Prologue de sa Règle saint Benoît, dans une scène symbolique, nous décrit Dieu passant sur la place publique et demandant : « Quel est celui qui désire la vie ? » Le moine pour qui Benoît écrit sa Règle est évidemment celui qui répond : « C`est moi ! ». Et à la fin de la Règle, en conclusion du chapitre 72, qui est le dernier écrit par Benoît (le chap. 73 ayant été écrit plus tôt comme conclusion de la Règle dans sa première forme), il recommande de « ne rien préférer du tout au Christ ; qu’il nous conduise tous ensemble à la vie éternelle »

In the Prologue to his Rule, St Benedict, in a symbolic scene, describes God passing by in the public square and asking: ‘Who is the one who desires life?’ The monk for whom Benedict wrote his Rule is obviously the one who answers: ‘It's me! And at the end of the Rule, at the conclusion of chapter 72, which is the last written by Benedict (chapter 73 having been written earlier as the conclusion of the Rule in its first form), he recommends that we ‘prefer nothing at all to Christ; may he lead us all together to eternal life’.

          Ce récit de l’Évangile que nous venons d’entendre est empreint d’une fraîcheur qu’il fait bon de retrouver après avoir entendu le tableau plutôt violent de la vision de l’Apocalypse que nous communiquait la première lecture, ainsi que le texte de saint Paul nous décrivant le Christ écrasant de ses pieds tous ses ennemis, même si le dernier ennemi qu’il détruit est la mort.

The Gospel account we have just heard is full of a freshness that is good to find again after hearing the rather violent picture of the vision of the Apocalypse given in the first reading, as well as Saint Paul's text describing Christ crushing all his enemies with his feet, even if the last enemy he destroys is death.

          Cet Évangile nous révèle beaucoup de choses aussi bien sur la personne de Jésus que sur la prière.  D’ailleurs, notre attitude face à la prière révèle en général assez bien l’image que nous avons de Dieu et du Christ.
