Is 55:6-9; Phil 1:20c-24,27; Mt 20:1-16a

Homily for the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year “A”

This Gospel passage is not a treatise on social justice. It does not speak of the just wage to be paid to wage earners, but concerns the Gentiles who will receive the Good News and be the first to enter the Kingdom, while the Jews, for the most part, will reject this Good News. The Church Fathers found so many allegorical applications in it that we are undoubtedly permitted to apply it allegorically to our current situation as well.

18 September 2026 – Friday of the 24th week

1 Cor 15, 12-20; Luke 8:1-3

These three short verses, which seem somewhat innocuous, shed a great deal of light on Jesus' ministry and the lifestyle he adopted with his disciples. This lifestyle had little in common with the rabbinical schools of the time, where disciples could gather around a teacher to receive training, but in a specific place and without participating in the teacher's mission. It was also different from that of the prophets of the Old Testament, who may have had one or two disciples (such as Elisha, Elijah's disciple), but not a group travelling with them.

          Ces trois petits versets, qui semblent un peu anodins nous apportent beaucoup de lumière sur le ministère de Jésus et sur le style de vie adopté avec ses disciples,  Ce style de vie n’a pas grand-chose en commun ni avec les écoles rabbiniques du temps où des disciples pouvaient se réunir autour d’un maître pour recevoir une formation, mais dans un endroit précis, et sans participer à la mission du maître. Il était aussi différent de celui des prophètes de l’Ancien Testament qui pouvaient bien avoir un disciple ou l’autre (comme, p.ex., Élisée, le disciple d’Élie) mais pas un groupe voyageant avec lui.

1 Cor 15:35–37, 42–49; Luke 8:4–15

Farming or gardening can be a good lesson in patience, trust, and surrender. Once the soil has been tilled, the seeds sown, and the plants watered, all that remains is to wait patiently. At first, there is no way to know for certain whether the seed will grow or not. Nor can one know to what extent it will grow. One can take various steps to create conditions that promote growth, but one cannot intervene in the process of growth itself. Keeping all this in mind, let us now return to today’s Gospel reading.

          L’agriculture ou le jardinage peuvent être une bonne école de patience, de confiance et d’abandon.  Une fois qu’on a travaillé le sol, qu’on y a déposé les semences et qu’on l’a arrosé, on n’a plus qu’à attendre avec patience.  Durant un premier temps il n’y a aucun moyen de savoir de façon certaine si la semence croîtra ou non.  Ensuite on ne peut savoir dans quelle mesure elle croîtra.  On peut agir de diverses manières sur les conditions qui favorisent la croissance, mais on ne peut intervenir aucunement dans le processus même de croissance.  Gardant tout ceci présent à l’esprit, revenons maintenant à la lecture de l’Évangile d’aujourd’hui.

We continue our reading of chapter 9 of Luke's Gospel, which we began a few days ago.

Peter's profession of faith in Caesarea was followed by Jesus' first announcement of his Passion. “The Son of Man,” he said, “must suffer greatly, be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be killed, and on the third day rise again.” About eight days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him up the mountain, where he was transfigured before them. After that, he made the second announcement of the Passion—which is the short text we have just read—and then came the long journey to Jerusalem, during which Luke placed several of Jesus' most radical calls to follow him, in particular the call to the rich young man to give up all his possessions and follow him.
