Homélie pour le 17 décembre 2024

Gen 49, 2-10 ; Mt 1, 1-17 

          A partir d’aujourd’hui nous chantons les fameuses antiennes « O », qui nous introduisent déjà d’une façon lyrique dans la joie du Temps de Noël. Les Évangiles des cinq derniers jours avant Noël seront tirés du premier chapitre de Luc, mais ceux d’aujourd’hui et de demain sont tirés du premier chapitre de Matthieu.

Homily

This morning's readings are extraordinarily rich. They present us with a grandiose fresco of Salvation History from the moment of creation to the fullness of time. And even the letter to the Ephesians takes us back even further, even before the creation of the world, to the moment when we were all chosen in Christ to be, in love, his sons and daughters, holy and blameless before him.

15 December 2024 -^3rd Sunday of Advent “C”

HOMILY

The first two readings we have heard, from the prophet Zephaniah and from Saint Paul to the Philippians, call us to joy. That's why this third Sunday of Advent is called ‘Sunday of Joy’ (‘ Gaudete Sunday’ as we used to say when we used Gregorian chant).

Les lectures de ce matin sont d'une richesse extraordinaire. Elles nous présentent une fresque grandiose de l'Histoire du Salut depuis le moment de la création jusqu'à la plénitude des temps. Et même la lettre aux Éphésiens nous fait remonter plus haut encore, avant même la création du monde, au moment où nous avons tous été choisis dans le Christ pour que nous soyons, dans l'amour ses fils et ses filles, saints et irréprochables devant lui.

          Les deux premières lectures que nous avons entendues, celle du prophète Sophonie et celle de saint Paul aux Philippiens, nous invitent à la joie. C’est pourquoi ce troisième dimanche de l’Avent est appelé « dimanche de la joie » (« dimanche Gaudete » disait-on à l’époque du grégorien).

Homily

The person of John the Baptist is at the heart of the liturgy of the second and third Sundays of Advent. In next Sunday's Gospel we hear his message, his call to conversion. Today's Gospel is about his mission as a prophet. We are not talking about his own words, but about the Word of God that was addressed to him, or rather, to translate the text more literally, the Word of God that ‘came down upon him’. Moreover, in these first chapters of Luke's Gospel, each section begins with an intervention by this Word of God. From the very opening of that Gospel, the Word of God is addressed to Zechariah in the Temple, and then to Mary, in whom it becomes flesh. Here, at the beginning of chapter three, it descends upon John the Baptist.
