Romans 6:12-18; Luke 12:39-48

Homily

We must be ready—not because death can come upon us at any moment; not because the end of the world can come at any moment. We must be ready for the coming of the Lord because He is always coming. He is Emmanuel, who is always with us, because He always comes to visit us.

This preparation is presented to us by the Gospel not as something purely individual, but rather as an ecclesial responsibility. Jesus does not say: when the master comes, you must leave behind all your occupations to make the final purification of your own soul. No. Jesus says: ‘Blessed is the faithful and wise steward who does not forget his stewardship’.

We own nothing. We are stewards. We do not own the faith; we have received it as a treasure that we must share. Being witnesses is a dimension of our mission as Christians.

Even our own religious charism does not belong to us. Like every charism, it belongs to the whole people of God. We are only its administrators, and we must give an account of our administration of this charism not only to God but to the whole people of God.

We have received all these charisms not to hide them in the ground and return them intact to the Master later, but we have received them with the mission to make them bear fruit.

The greatest gift of all, we receive it in this Eucharist that we celebrate. We receive Christ's love for us in the form of His body and His food. This love is also a treasure of which we are only the guardians. We do not receive it to keep it only in the secret of our hearts. We receive it to communicate it like a fire that must set everything and everyone around us ablaze.
